Center for Behavioral Health

Behavioral Health

The world is not an easy place for young people or their parents. While always the case, this now seems even more true. The Center for Behavioral Health (CBH) at Falmouth Pediatrics was born out of a desire to promote and improve emotional health in our area.

Our first therapist (Jenna Wright Smith) was hired in 2021, and we’ve been growing ever since. Providers right at the pediatric office allow easier collaboration and referral, better communication and less stigma for patients. In 2025, the CBH renovation allowed us to dedicate an entire floor to this mission.

Providers

Karyn Ellis, PMHNP holds a Doctor of Nursing from Regis College, where she was also on faculty. She spent 16 years as a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner in primary care before embracing the tremendous need for psychiatric mental health and earning a Masters of PMHNP, also from Regis. Since that time, she has dedicated herself to helping pediatric patients with a wide range of mental health issues. She is also the proud mother of Will, a precocious young man with a wide smile.

Jenna Wright Smith, LICSW, has been a Behavioral Health Specialist at Falmouth Pediatrics since 2021. She earned her undergraduate degree from Colby College in Maine and completed her Master of Social Work at Boston College Graduate School of Social Work in 2005. Since 2010, Jenna has worked closely with children, adolescents, and their families, supporting them in navigating emotional and behavioral challenges, using CBT, Solution Focused and Collaborative therapy. She feels fortunate to work in a field she’s passionate about and doing a job she loves.

Melissa Noonan, MA, MS, earned a Master in Higher Education from Geneva College, and worked with college students for 10 years. She then spent three years helping people with substance use disorders and five years helping high school students with mental illness and academic challenges. She subsequently earned a Masters in Mental Health Counseling from UMass Boston. Melissa loves to support families on their wellness journey through client-centered, trauma-informed therapy, using CBT, DBT and Acceptance and Commitment and Therapy. She has raised two young adults along the way.

Greg Parkinson, MD. uses his many years as a general pediatrician, along with additional training and experience in developmental medicine, to diagnose and treat patients here on the Cape. He takes a personal interest in each child, teen and family. Dr. Parkinson is certified in the CARS2 and the ADOS2 evaluation for Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Our Services

Psychiatric Evaluation and Treatment Everyone can have issues with their emotional health, and all the providers at FPA are comfortable doing some psychiatry, but sometimes the diagnosis is complicated, or the usual treatments don’t seem to be working. When this happens, a fulltime psychiatric provider can be invaluable. A detailed evaluation can help to get to the heart of the issue.

Developmental Evaluation and Treatment Developmental conditions have become more common, but developmental pediatricians have not. This means long waits for an appointment at the pediatric hospital. Our goal is early, accurate diagnosis and treatment. New patient evaluations take from one to several visits, depending on complexity, after which a plan is created, and follow-up is offered. Collaboration with Boston specialty providers is always encouraged when needed.

Behavioral Therapy Cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings and behaviors. Our therapists utilize CBT as a cornerstone in their treatment planning for patients. They also use a wide variety of other modalities to meet the unique needs of children, adolescents and families.

Group Therapy There are many benefits to working through challenges with peers in a supervised setting. To date, the CBH has offered Tween Anxiety, Needle Phobia, and Adolescent Grief groups. Others are in the works.

Community Collaboration Our providers are active in the behavioral health community on the Cape. Through membership in committees and groups outside the office, we learn about programs and services that can benefit your family.

Patient Centered Medical Home Many of the families seen at the CBH are enrolled into Medical Home at FPA, which allows for more opportunities for outreach and support. (see Services for more details).
